A Dying Art?

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

I recently visited San Francisco which is one of my favorite places on earth! While I was there I attended a vintage paper fair. I have been to this fair before and am always amazed at the array of gorgeous time loved ephemera. I am always struck by the beauty of the penmanship on the backs of antique postcards. I often think the well crafted cursive writing is the real treasure on these items.

A few days ago I read an article that states some educational boards across the US “no longer require the teaching of cursive writing, but do emphasize the development of keyboarding skills beginning in third grade”. I am truly hoping this is a passing educational fad. There is a strong need to focus on learning the skills to embrace modern technology but I think it would be a great shame to lose this art to our ipads, don’t you? You can read the article here.

If you want to take your cursive to the next level, why not try your hand at calligraphy. Check out this link.

DIY Pin Cushion

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

On a recent trip to Victoria I stopped at one of my favorite antique shops on Fort street. I happened upon this adorable child’s cup from the 1930′s. The cup was made by W.R. Midwinter Ltd, Burslem, England. For those of you who share my love of vintage here is a little info about the manufacturer.

William Midwinter started the factory at Bank Potteries but their success was so big that in 1914 they had to move to a new location, Albion Pottery. The factory excelled in the production of nursery ware, for which they employed designer William Heath Robinson. Roy Midwinter joined the company in 1946. This mark on my cup was in use from 1932 till 1941.

Well after bringing the cup home I decided “Georgie Porgie” looked a little too sad so I am hoping he will feel more useful now that he is a part of my funky new pincushion!

  1. Start by heating your glue gun. Fill the bottom of your cup with something heavy – we suggest rice. Using fabric scissors, cut your fabric and sheets of cotton batting into circles which are about 3 times as wide as the opening of your cup.
  2. Grab an elastic and your cotton batting and prepare to wrap your styrofoam ball. We suggest using 2-3 layers of the cotton batting to ensure that you’ll have plenty of space for your pins to hold.
  3. Next, wrap your styrofoam ball with layers of cotton batting, then secure tightly with an elastic. Finish by adding your layer of fabric on top, securing with a second elastic.
  4. Using your glue gun, add a thin layer of glue to the top of the inside of your cup. You want to ensure that the padded pin cushion stays inside the cup when the pins are pulled in and out. Push down, and hold tightly for a minutes until the glue sets.

Simple as that – You’re finished! Fill up your new pin cushion and feel free to add any extra decorations like ribbons or bows to compliment your fabric choice. Enjoy!

Perfect Patio Pillow!

Lily Ashbury Pillow

Spruce up your patio with a little bit of DIY fun. I adorned a solid green throw pillow by printing one of my designs on an iron on transfer sheet, cutting the image out, and ironing it on. It’s easy and fun and you can do it too because I’m giving you the image to download for your next DIY day. Besides pillows, why not try it on a tote bag or t-shirt? Download the image here. Enjoy!

Please remember that the use of this image is for personal use only and is not to be used on products for resale.

Downloadable Bookplates for an Organized Life

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

The birds are chirping and the sun is shining and unfortunately ’tis the time for Spring cleaning. I thought I’d design these fun and colorful bookplates to help inspire me to organize my books which are in major disarray and have gotten a little out of hand on my bookshelf. Download them for yourself too. They’re also a great way to make sure you get your books back from your friends when you lend them out.

DIY Pretty Potted Flowers

Monday, March 21st, 2011

In honor of Spring my daughter Izzy and I decided to craft these colorful paper flowers. My husband Fraser is out of town on business so it was a wonderful girls weekend full of fun creative activities! We used “Florals Embellished” my new “Cricut” cartridge. We chose flower #6 on the silhouette settings and used foam dots to give them a 3D effect. I think they are just the thing to brighten up a windowsill while waiting for Spring flowers to bloom.
