In my neighborhood

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

When the Cat’s away the Mice will play! Whenever my husband goes away on business my daughter and I devote ourselves to all things creative. This past weekend while Fraser was in Boston, Izzy and I visited one of our favorite shops. Urban Source is a fun little shop in the hipster neighborhood of lower Main street. At this eco-friendly wonderland most of the crafting goodies are recyclables. Factories of all types donate their off-cuts and scraps, stuff that otherwise might be headed for the nearest landfill. Crafters and creatives of all ages pay by the bag full and find themselves on a mini treasure hunt while filling them to the brim. They also have a good selection of glues and glitters etc. to round out their offering. A fun place to visit and never the same twice.

After our shopping spree we made cute matching pendants. Still in progress are a saddled turkey and a robot:)

I love the format of this calendar. It’s skinny and fits perfectly in my purse along with so many other random things. When I do get around to cleaning out my purse I am sometimes amazed at what I find in there, like one kids sock or assorted small toys. Tell us what kind of random things you have in your purse right now and you’ll be entered to win this jotter. The contest closes November 13th. Good luck!

Vancouver Shop Gem

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012

In the funky and historic Vancouver community of Yaletown is a lovely store called “The Cross”. They feature an amazing collection of furniture, eclectic decor items, jewelry and even a library section. I adore getting inspired by their stylish offerings and picking up a book so I can dream more when I get home. They even have an adorable kids section that hosts sweet plush animals, blankets and keepsakes. If in Vancouver it is most definitely worth a peek. Or you can visit their web site here.

Moda Blog Hop: September 2012

Monday, September 10th, 2012
Welcome to the “Oh Sew Sweet” Moda designer blog hop. I am excited to be in the company of so many amazing designers. Below I will tell you a bit about my home town of Vancouver BC Canada, enjoy!

I am a bona fide “Vancouverite” born and raised. As it turns out in 2012 there are not  too many of us. Vancouver is a port city and has long been considered the “Pacific Gateway” between Asia and North America. As you might guess Vancouver has grown into a truly amazing multicultural city.

Vancouver sure has grown since I was a kid. In the late sixties the population was a fairly healthy 800,000 but today we are at over 2.3 million people.

Our town fair the Pacific National Exhibition has been alive and well since 1910. I have fond memories of kiddy rides, baby piglets and corn dogs that go way back for me. You won’t catch me riding the roller coaster though. I rode it once at the age of seven and vowed never to do it again, it terrified me! Not to mention the fact it was built in 1958 and is made of wood (see above)… need I say more.

What Vancouver is often known for is it’s beauty. Now I don’t mean to sound like a travel postcard but on a sunny day it has got to be one of the prettiest places on earth! It has been voted one of the most livable cities on the planet many times. But what they don’t tell you while singing it’s praise is………………….

It rains a great deal, and when I say a great deal I mean a GREAT DEAL!!!
On average 161 days of rain per year. So, don’t forget your umbrella if you plan to visit:)

So what do I do when it’s raining? Visit my favorite restaurant of course. Along with multicultural diversity comes amazing ethnic food. Vancouver has so many fantastic eateries it’s hard to pick just one but my favorite at the moment has to be

Vij’s. Vikram Vij is the head chef and owner of this famous Vancouver haunt. They serve the best Indian cuisine I have ever tasted bar none. Pictured above are the Lamb popsicles, they are simply to die for!!!

The Gypsy Girl line is fun fresh and flirty, perfect for bringing a pop of color into your life. I am working on several projects that I am sure you will love. Please stay tuned as I will share them with you in the next couple of weeks.

It’s giveaway time!! Please leave a comment and tell me what your next 2 sewing projects will be and 3 lucky winners will be randomly selected to receive one of the goodies above. The “Gypsy Girl” charm pack, “Gypsy Girl” layer cake and “Gypsy Girl” jelly roll were generously provided by Moda.
Thanks so much for stopping by and please be sure to visit the amazing designers who I am sharing this hop day with.

Happy sewing and best wishes,
Stephanie
